GFRG
Formglas was the first manufacturer in North America to produce GFRG
and has since evolved into the world's largest and leading manufacturer.
Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG or GRG) is a white 'thin cast' alpha gypsum
that is field finished, or may be factory finished depending on the specific
application. Where once traditional 'plaster castings' were used, Glass Fiber
Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG or GRG) is now specified because of its lightweight,
superior strength and ease of installation.
Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG or GRG) is the bridge to shapes and curves for the drywall/plasterboard trades. With the move away from "less is more" in the late 1970's and the re-introduction of traditional architectural forms, GFRG (or GRG) evolved as the ideal medium. The construction boom of the past four decades established Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum as the means for architects and designers to achieve their design visions, while leveraging the experience of regular building trades. Today, Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum is used to achieve modern and "organic" shapes on walls and ceiling, in addition to traditional architectural shapes.
Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum is a composite of high strength alpha gypsum reinforced with glassfibers that can be factory molded into virtually any shape or size. GFRG (or GRG) is a non-combustible material (test results of flame spread and smoke development values as per ASTM E-84) and even the largest parts only weigh 2-3 pounds per square foot (10-15 kg/m2). Similar to traditional plaster castings but considerably lighter and stronger, Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum is typically field finished with any interior paint. Joints can be taped and finishing is similar to drywall finishing. The use of post-consumer recycled material, the fact that GFRG castings are made to size and are designed to minimize excessive framing, makes Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum a favorable choice for LEED or green construction projects.
Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG or GRG) is the most economical Formglas material and is used in a range of architectural applications such as ceilings, column covers, decorative wall panels, domes, bulkheads, light coves, and more.
In North America specify Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG or GRG) under CSI MasterFormat Division 9.
